The Holy Rosary is one of the most beloved prayers in the Catholic Church. Saints have called it a weapon, a school of contemplation and a summary of the whole Gospel. Yet many Catholics, whether returning to the faith or exploring it for the first time, quietly admit they’re not sure how to pray it.
If that’s you, you’re in the right place. Here is a simple, step-by-step guide.
What is the Rosary?
The Rosary is a meditative prayer in which we reflect on the life of Jesus Christ through the eyes of His Blessed Mother. While our lips repeat familiar prayers, our hearts and minds dwell on events, called mysteries, from the life, death and Resurrection of Our Lord.
It’s not mindless repetition. The repeated Hail Marys create a steady rhythm, like a heartbeat, that frees the mind to contemplate Christ.

The prayers you’ll need
Before you begin, it helps to know these prayers:
- The Sign of the Cross
- The Apostles’ Creed
- The Our Father
- The Hail Mary
- The Glory Be
- The Fatima Prayer (optional but widely prayed): “O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, lead all souls to Heaven, especially those most in need of Thy mercy.”
- The Hail, Holy Queen (Salve Regina)
If you don’t know them all by heart yet, keep a printed copy with your rosary. You’ll learn them quickly.
How the beads are arranged
A standard rosary has a crucifix, a short strand of five beads, and a circle of five decades. Each decade is one large bead (for the Our Father) followed by ten small beads (for the Hail Marys). A centerpiece, often a medal of Our Lady, joins the circle to the short strand.
How to pray the Rosary, step by step
- Holding the crucifix, make the Sign of the Cross and pray the Apostles’ Creed.
- On the first large bead, pray one Our Father.
- On the next three small beads, pray three Hail Marys, traditionally for an increase in faith, hope and charity.
- On the chain or next large bead, pray the Glory Be.
- Announce the first mystery and pray the Our Father on the large bead.
- On the ten small beads, pray ten Hail Marys while meditating on the mystery.
- Pray the Glory Be, and add the Fatima Prayer if you wish.
- Repeat steps 5 to 7 for the second, third, fourth and fifth decades, announcing each new mystery.
- Close with the Hail, Holy Queen, a closing prayer, and the Sign of the Cross.
A full five-decade Rosary usually takes around 15 to 20 minutes.

The Luminous Mysteries
In 2002, Pope St. John Paul II proposed the Luminous Mysteries (the Mysteries of Light) in his apostolic letter Rosarium Virginis Mariae: 1. The Baptism of the Lord 2. The Wedding at Cana 3. The Proclamation of the Kingdom 4. The Transfiguration 5. The Institution of the Eucharist

Which mysteries to pray each day
Following the schedule suggested in Rosarium Virginis Mariae:
| Day | Mysteries |
|---|---|
| Monday | Joyful |
| Tuesday | Sorrowful |
| Wednesday | Glorious |
| Thursday | Luminous |
| Friday | Sorrowful |
| Saturday | Joyful |
| Sunday | Glorious |
Many Catholics who pray the traditional fifteen-decade Rosary keep the older pattern of Joyful, Sorrowful and Glorious mysteries only. Both are prayed faithfully in the Church; what matters most is praying it with devotion.
Tips for praying the Rosary well
- Start small. If a full Rosary feels like too much, begin with one decade a day.
- Pick a time and place. Before bed, during a commute, or as a family after dinner.
- Offer an intention. Pray for a person, a need, or the Holy Souls in Purgatory.
- Picture the scene. Imagine yourself present at each mystery.
- Pray it with others. A family Rosary is a powerful habit, and praying along with a recording or broadcast can help you keep pace while you learn.
- Don’t worry about distractions. Gently return your attention to the mystery. The effort itself is prayer.
